Mount Cook: Glentanner High Country Heli Hike

About This Experience
The Glentanner High Country Heli Hike takes you somewhere most visitors to Aoraki/Mount Cook never go: private land on Glentanner Station, a family-owned high-country station, one of New Zealand's most historic. It combines a scenic helicopter flight, a guided walk and a look back at the region's farming history in about three and a half hours.
A helicopter flies you from Glentanner to a landing point high on the station's land. From there a knowledgeable guide leads you along a well-maintained track of about 7 km, descending through tussock country shaped by ancient glaciers. Reviewers single out the guides for their knowledge of the station, its landowners, flora and fauna.
Along the way you visit the fully restored Historic Field Station and its exhibition, and stop for morning or afternoon tea with a snack and drink provided. Walking poles are supplied, or bring your own. The operator cannot cater for special diets, so bring your own snacks if you have one.
The walk covers about seven kilometres of uneven ground, so a reasonable level of mobility is needed. A return flight from the landing site can be arranged for guests who would rather not walk. The hike depends on the weather, and if it is unsafe for flying or walking you can move to another time or day if space allows.

What Travelers Say
Rated 5.0/5 by 7 verified GetYourGuide travelers.
Great. We were lucky that even though there were no other customers, the tour wasn't canceled, so it was totally private. The guide was, without a doubt, the best part of the tour. Bryan was fun, super informative, and really nice and attentive. The tour itself is very interesting, the landscapes are awesome.

What a fantastic tour! The scenery was stunning, and our guide, Brian, was exceptional! He was extremely knowledgeable and took the time to explain everything to us. We were very lucky to have learned so much from this tour. The other family who joined the tour were also wonderful people, making the experience even more enjoyable!

Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the walk and how hard is it?
About 7 km on a well-maintained track that descends gradually through the station's high country. The ground is uneven, so you need reasonable mobility and fitness, and the tour is not suitable for people with mobility impairments or a low level of fitness. Walking poles are provided.
Can I do the flight without the walk?
Yes. The operator says a return flight from the landing site can be arranged for guests who do not wish to walk, so a less mobile member of the group can still enjoy the helicopter flight and the view. Ask for this when you book so the flight can be planned.
Is food included?
A morning or afternoon tea break is included, with a snack and a drink. The operator cannot cater for special dietary requirements, so if you follow a restricted diet, bring your own snacks. There is no full meal on the tour, so eat before you check in at Glentanner.
Where does the tour start?
At the reception desk of Glentanner Park Centre on State Highway 80, beside Lake Pukaki on the road to Mount Cook Village. The helicopter leaves from here and lands high on Glentanner Station's land, and the walk brings you back down through the station.
What happens in bad weather?
The heli-hike depends on the weather, and the operator can cancel if conditions are unsafe for the helicopter or the walk. You may move to another time slot or day if space, weather and your plans allow, and scheduled times can also be adjusted on the day because of the weather.
