Mount Cook Flight: Worth It?

Yes, for most visitors, provided the weather is clear and you choose the flight by what you want to see. The value flight is INFLITE’s Scenic Helicopter Flight with Alpine Landing: 25 minutes up the Tasman Valley with a landing in the mountains, from $217 per person and rated 4.7 from 517 reviews, the most of any flight on this site. Pay more only for something specific: reliable snow in summer, the West Coast glaciers, or time walking on the ice. If the forecast is cloudy for your whole stay, or $217 would stretch your budget, the free walks in the valley are very good in their own right.

What the 25-minute flight gives you

From Aoraki/Mount Cook Airport the helicopter climbs straight into the Tasman Valley, crosses a glacier lake, and puts down at an alpine landing site where you get out and stand among the peaks. The pilot talks you through what you are seeing the whole way. It is short, but the scale is what a walk cannot show you: the Tasman Glacier runs for 23 km, New Zealand’s longest, and from the air you see how it fills the valley below Aoraki/Mount Cook (3,724 m).

The catch is snow. INFLITE says its alpine landing sites may have little or no snow roughly December to March, so in summer you may step out with no snow underfoot. The 3-Hour Tasman Glacier Helicopter Ride and Hike is the most expensive option in the table and the one with the highest rating. You fly in, spend up to two hours on the ice with a guide who cuts steps, and fly out. Boots, crampons and a waterproof jacket are supplied, and the minimum age is nine. The walking is slow and on uneven ice, and the operator rates it low to moderate fitness.

What you can see for free on foot

The real competitor to any flight here is the Hooker Valley Track. It is 10 km return and takes about three hours (allow three to four), on an easy to intermediate path with three swing bridges, ending at Hooker Lake at the foot of Aoraki/Mount Cook. In summer icebergs float in the lake. Parking at White Horse Hill costs $2.50 per half-hour or $25 a day, with the first 20 minutes free, card only. DOC describes it as one of New Zealand’s best day walks.

The Tasman Glacier View Track is shorter: 1.5 km return, about 30 minutes, with more than 300 steps up the moraine wall to a view of Tasman Lake and the end of the glacier. A five-minute side trip leads to the Blue Lakes. Parking is free.

Both walks show you the mountain and the lower glaciers from the valley floor. What they cannot give you is the upper Tasman Glacier, the Hochstetter Icefall and a landing up among the peaks. Most visitors with a clear day and the budget do both: the walk one day and the flight another.

Weather is the real risk

Mountain weather here changes fast at any time of year, and no operator publishes how often flights are cancelled, so there is no reliable figure to plan around. Glentanner Park, south of the village, says the mountain can be seen about one day in three. Treat that as a local rule of thumb, not a statistic.

What protects your money is the booking terms. INFLITE and The Helicopter Line both rebook or refund if they cancel for weather, and GetYourGuide bookings can be cancelled for free up to 24 hours before. INFLITE makes its final call on the day, sometimes as little as 10 minutes before departure. Both operators recommend booking early in your stay, so there is time to rebook if the first day is cloudy.

Who should skip it

• Anyone with a single day at Mount Cook and a poor forecast. Walk the Hooker Valley and save the money.
• People who get badly motion sick. If you do fly, keep to a 25-minute flight, which keeps your time in the air short.
• Anyone over 116 kg planning an INFLITE flight, whose general per-person limit that is. The Helicopter Line works to a combined weight per helicopter, so ask it directly.
• Wheelchair users and people with limited mobility. The Alpine Vista lists wheelchair users as unsuitable and INFLITE’s 55-minute flight lists people with mobility impairments, so ask the operator what access is possible.
• Summer visitors whose only goal is snow, if the budget stops at $217. The short flight may not land on any.
• Budget travellers who would rather spend $217 on something else. The walks give you most of the view for the price of parking.
