Mount Cook Helicopter Prices

Mount Cook scenic flights cost from $217 to $525 per person, and Tasman Glacier heli-hikes from $569 to $597. For a first flight in the middle of that range, Glacier Helicopters’ Helicopter Flight with Alpine Landing is $277 for 30 minutes, rated 4.9 from 49 reviews. For $37 more, INFLITE’s ski plane and helicopter combo gives you 45 minutes and a landing on the Tasman Glacier, the lowest cost per minute of any flight from Mount Cook. Mount Cook flight prices, cheapest first

Prices are USD per person, the “from” figure on each listing in September 2026, and they move with season and exchange rates. Several flights are sold on both sites, so both appear.

Where a flight is on both sites, GetYourGuide is cheaper in every pair here, by $5 to $28, but Viator sometimes has far more reviews: The Helicopter Line’s 55-minute flight has 141 there against 45 on GetYourGuide, and Mountains High has 61 against 7.

What drives the price

Four things separate a $217 flight from a $597 one.

• Minutes in the air. The 25-minute flights cost $217 to $231, the 40 and 45-minute flights $314 to $393, and the 55-minute flights that cross the Main Divide to Fox and Franz Josef $428 to $525. Listed times include the landing.
• Landing type. An alpine landing puts you on a mountain site where snow depends on the season. A glacier landing puts you on the upper Tasman Glacier, which has snow and ice all year. Glacier Helicopters charges $277 for 30 minutes with an alpine landing and $374 for 40 minutes with a Tasman Glacier landing.
• Crossing to the West Coast. The long flights add the Fox and Franz Josef glaciers, and that is most of the extra cost.
• Guiding on the ice. A heli-hike adds a mountain guide, boots, crampons and a waterproof jacket, and three hours of someone’s time. That is why the Tasman heli-hikes start at $569 even though the flying is short.

Cost per minute

Dividing the price by the listed flight time shows where the value sits. These are our own sums from the listing prices.

Children’s prices

The GetYourGuide and Viator figures above are the adult “from” price. Some operators publish lower child fares on their own sites, in New Zealand dollars. These are the operators’ own NZD rates at the time of writing:

The Helicopter Line charges one per-person rate, and infants under 15 kg sit on an adult’s knee. INFLITE lets infants ride on a lap but still allocates and charges a seat. What it costs for two, four or six

A helicopter flight is easier to judge as the total for your party than as one seat. At the starting price, before any child fare:

Moving two people from the 25-minute flight to the combo adds about $194 to the booking. That is the real question to ask: is a landing on the Tasman Glacier and 20 more minutes in the air worth about $200 to the two of you? For four people the same step costs about $390, which is why the short flight makes more sense for a family than for a couple.

For a group of five or six, compare a private charter before you buy six seats. (Planning a private charter for a proposal? Start there.) INFLITE sells a 90-minute private helicopter trip with a glacier landing and a picnic, for up to six people, direct on its own website at NZ$4,999 for the helicopter. That works out at about NZ$833 each for six. Six adult seats on INFLITE’s Grand Circle at its own rate of NZ$799 come to NZ$4,794, so the private trip costs the group about NZ$200 more, for a longer trip with the aircraft to yourselves. For two people it is far dearer than any seat.

Weight limits

Helicopters are balanced by weight, so every operator asks for it. INFLITE sets a limit of 116 kg (255 lb) per person and may weigh you at check-in. The Helicopter Line takes up to six passengers or 480 kg combined per helicopter, and up to 150 kg for a passenger in a rear seat on its heli-hike. Air Safaris’ limit is 130 kg. INFLITE’s listings say that if a flight’s combined weight is too high, you may be moved to another departure or can cancel for a full refund. What’s not included

• Transport. Hotel pickup is not included on the Alpine Vista, the Glacier Helicopters flights, Southern Lakes or Air Safaris. The Helicopter Line’s heli-hike includes pickup in the village, and its Alpine Explorer, Mountains High and 55-minute flights can include transport from Mount Cook Village.
• Food and drink. No scenic flight here lists food or drink as included. The Glentanner heli hike includes snacks and drinks.
• Parking. The combo includes free parking at Aoraki/Mount Cook Airport.
• Drones. Recreational drones are banned across the national park, and INFLITE does not allow selfie sticks on board.

Operators in New Zealand quote prices with GST included. At checkout, look out for card fees and currency conversion: if your card is billed in New Zealand dollars, your bank may add a foreign transaction fee.

Paying more buys more route, not better weather

A 55-minute flight on a hazy day can show you less of Aoraki than a 25-minute flight on a clear morning. The extra money buys distance: the upper glacier, the Main Divide, the West Coast. It does not buy visibility. That is why flexible dates are worth more at Mount Cook than an upgrade, and why the operators tell you to fly early in your stay.

Prices are not much lower in winter either. Flying costs the operators the same all year, and their listed rates do not drop out of season the way hotel rates do. Choose the date that suits your trip and check the price for that day.

A scenic flight or a heli-hike

The heli-hikes cost more than most scenic flights, but they are a different trip, not a better version of the same one.

• Choose a scenic flight if you want to see as much of the Southern Alps as possible, you are short on time, walking on uneven ice does not appeal, or your group has mixed fitness.
• Choose a heli-hike if being on the glacier matters more than covering distance. You get up to two hours on the ice, not 10 to 15 minutes on the snow, with a guide and crampons.

Cancellation terms and where to book

The same operator flies you whether you book direct, on GetYourGuide or on Viator. What changes is the cancellation policy, and at Mount Cook, where weather cancellations are common, that matters more than a small price difference.

• Every GetYourGuide listing in the table has free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
• INFLITE’s own terms charge the full price for a scenic flight you cancel less than 48 hours before.
• The Helicopter Line gives no refund for changes you make less than 24 hours before.
• When the operator cancels for weather, INFLITE and The Helicopter Line rebook you or refund you in full.

Saving $15 is a poor trade if it costs you free cancellation on a weather-dependent flight. Read the terms attached to your own booking.

Booking ahead

Booking early does not usually get you a lower price, as it can with airlines. It gets you a seat. INFLITE’s helicopters carry five to seven people, depending on weight, so popular morning departures fill. And waiting for a last-minute deal rarely works: unsold seats are not discounted.

Most INFLITE flights also need a minimum number of passengers. If a departure does not fill, the operator reschedules you or combines flights, so a confirmed booking in a quiet week is not a guaranteed departure. Book ahead, and book for early in your stay.

Ways to keep the cost down

• Take the 25-minute flight. You still get the helicopter, the mountains and a landing. What you give up is distance.
• Look at the combo. For $314 it puts you in a ski plane and a helicopter and lands on the glacier, for less than either single-aircraft Glacier Highlights flight at $380.
• Do not pay twice. If you already have a flight booked at Franz Josef, Fox, Queenstown or Milford Sound, a long 55-minute flight here may repeat much of it. One big South Island scenic flight is enough for many budgets.
• Price a charter for five or six people.
• Keep free cancellation over a slightly cheaper ticket without it.

Two ways to save that backfire: buying a fixed-wing “scenic flight” when it was a helicopter you wanted, and booking an alpine landing when your goal was standing on the glacier. You spend hundreds of dollars either way, so pay for the one you want.
