Mount Cook Helicopter Tours in November

Flying over Aoraki/Mount Cook in November: spring weather, alpine versus glacier snow landings, which flights to compare, prices, departure points and booking tips.

Updated November 2026

November is a good month to fly over Aoraki/Mount Cook. New Zealand is moving from spring into summer, the days are long, and the high peaks and glaciers still carry plenty of snow. The Southern Alps can still throw up cloud, wind and rain at short notice, so book a flight early in a stay of two or three days and keep some room to move it.

If you want to step onto snow, look closely at the landing. An alpine landing on a ridge is not the same as a glacier landing. Snow and ice stay on the high glaciers all summer, while some lower alpine landing sites lose their snow as the weather warms, usually from about December. In November those alpine sites normally still have snow, which makes the shorter flights a good fit this month.

Is November a good time for a Mount Cook helicopter tour?

Yes, especially if you are already touring the South Island in spring. In November you get:

  • Longer daylight, so there is time to fit a scenic flight around walks, viewpoints or the drive to your next stop.
  • Snow and ice scenery: the Tasman Glacier and the high slopes look dramatic even as the valleys warm up.
  • A choice of flights: short helicopter flights, longer glacier flights, and a helicopter and ski plane combination.
  • Changeable spring weather. A sunny forecast in Lake Tekapo or Twizel does not mean it is safe to fly at Mount Cook.

November does not promise sunshine or a particular landing. Cloud, visibility, wind and conditions at the landing site matter more than the date on the calendar.

Can you land on snow at Mount Cook in November?

Yes, but pick the right flight. If snow underfoot is the point, look for a flight that names a landing on the Tasman Glacier. A landing described only as “mountain” or “alpine” does not promise snow.

INFLITE (Mount Cook Ski Planes & Helicopters) runs the 25-minute Tasman Taster, sold on GetYourGuide as the Scenic Helicopter Flight with Alpine Landing (from $217, rated 4.7 from 530 reviews). It lands at Brass Peak or Liebig Dome, and INFLITE says that site has snow for most of the year apart from the heat of summer, roughly December to March. INFLITE’s 45-minute combo, the Ski Plane and Helicopter Glacier Combo Flight (from $314, 4.7 from 378 reviews), puts you in both aircraft and usually lands on the Tasman Glacier. Every landing depends on conditions on the day.

Before booking, ask:

  1. Is the planned landing on a glacier or at an alpine site?
  2. If the planned site has no snow, is there another one the pilot can use?
  3. What happens if the flight can go but the landing cannot?
  4. Does the advertised flight time include the time on the ground?

Even on glacier-landing flights, no operator can guarantee a specific landing in advance.

Best shorter flight: Tasman Taster

If this is your first helicopter flight and you mostly want a dramatic look at Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, 25 minutes is a sensible start. The Tasman Taster flies up the Tasman Valley and over the Tasman Terminal Lake before its alpine landing. INFLITE listed it at NZ$379 per person direct in November 2026; on GetYourGuide the Scenic Helicopter Flight with Alpine Landing starts from $217.

Choose it if mountain scenery and a short stop up high matter more to you than standing on glacier snow. In November the landing site usually still has snow.

Best for stepping onto glacier snow: Ultimate Alpine Experience

INFLITE’s 45-minute combo puts you in a ski plane and a helicopter on one trip, and usually lands on the upper Tasman Glacier when conditions allow. It costs NZ$599 per adult direct, or from $314 as the Ski Plane and Helicopter Glacier Combo Flight on GetYourGuide.

Choose it if a glacier landing is a big reason for coming to Mount Cook and the extra cost over the 25-minute flight suits your budget. Our ski plane and helicopter combo guide covers it in detail.

Best for a broader panorama: longer glacier flights

The longer flights take in more icefalls, glacier valleys and peaks beyond the Tasman Valley. INFLITE’s 45-minute Glacier Highlights helicopter flight (NZ$699 direct, sold on Viator) lands on the Tasman Glacier. The 55-minute Grand Circle (NZ$799 direct, or the 55-Minute Scenic Flight in Helicopter or Ski Plane on GetYourGuide) crosses the Main Divide for views of the Fox and Franz Josef glaciers when the weather allows, then lands on the Tasman.

Choose one of these if flight time and ground covered matter more to you than the lowest price. Compare the actual route and landing as well as the tour name; our scenic flight routes guide maps them.

What is the weather like at Mount Cook in November?

November is spring in New Zealand. Days in the Mackenzie Basin can be pleasant, but it is much colder up in the mountains and harder to predict. A clear morning can cloud over around the peaks, and strong wind can ground helicopters even when the sun is out in the valley.

Does rain automatically cancel the flight?

Not always, but low cloud, poor visibility, wind and other unsafe conditions can. The pilot and operator decide on the actual conditions along the route and at the landing site, and a weather-app symbol does not settle it.

Is morning better than afternoon?

No rule says morning flights are smoother or clearer. An early flight helps because it leaves more of your day free if the operator can offer a later departure after a weather delay. Follow the operator’s local advice on the day, and see our guide to the best time of day to fly.

What if my flight is cancelled?

INFLITE says that when it cancels because flying conditions are unsuitable, you can reschedule at no extra cost or get a full refund. Its rules for cancellations you make yourself are separate, and a GetYourGuide or Viator booking follows the listing’s own terms. Our guide to flights in bad weather explains how rebooking works.

Practical tip: put your flight on the first day of a two- or three-day stay at Mount Cook or in the Mackenzie. You then have another chance if the weather stops the flight.

Mount Cook helicopter tour prices in November

Prices depend on the flight, where it departs and the passenger’s age. There is no separate November rate. INFLITE’s direct adult prices in late 2026 were NZ$379 for the 25-minute Tasman Taster, NZ$599 for the combo, NZ$699 for Glacier Highlights and NZ$799 for the Grand Circle. The longer glacier and two-aircraft flights cost more.

Compare what you get as well as the price:

  • Is the landing alpine, on snow, or on a glacier?
  • Is the time on the ground included in the advertised duration?
  • Does the ticket include a transfer from Mount Cook Village?
  • Are there minimum passenger numbers or weight limits?
  • What refund or rebooking options apply in bad weather?

For live prices and dates, use the current operator or booking-platform listing and ignore any figure quoted months earlier. Our Mount Cook helicopter price guide compares every flight.

Where do November helicopter flights depart?

The main departure points are Aoraki/Mount Cook Airport, Glentanner Park and Lake Tekapo, depending on the operator. They are not interchangeable, so check which one your ticket names.

Staying in Mount Cook Village

Mount Cook Airport is about 6 km before the village. INFLITE flies from the airport and says a limited number of pre-booked pick-ups from village accommodation may be available, so ask when you book. Other operators use different bases, including one in the village and The Helicopter Line at Glentanner Park, so follow the exact address on your ticket. Our airport and Glentanner guide shows which operator flies from where.

Staying in Lake Tekapo

Lake Tekapo is a practical base for the region. You can book a scenic flight that leaves from Tekapo, such as the Lake Tekapo 50-Minute Mount Cook and Beyond Scenic Flight (4.9 from 137 reviews), or drive about 1.5 hours towards Mount Cook for a departure from the airport or Glentanner. Allow time for the drive, photo stops, parking and check-in.

Driving from Queenstown or Christchurch

A flight can fit into a long driving day: Queenstown is about 3.5 hours away and Christchurch about 4.5 hours. A long drive leaves you more exposed to road delays and weather cancellations, though. If the flight is a highlight of your trip, a night near Mount Cook, Twizel or Tekapo gives you more room.

What to wear on a Mount Cook helicopter flight in November

Dress for a cold mountain landing, whatever the temperature outside your hotel.

  • Wear layers, including a warm jacket and a windproof outer layer.
  • Wear closed shoes with good grip; sandals are no good on snow or ice.
  • Bring sunglasses for the glare, especially if you are landing on snow.
  • Use sunscreen, because UV is strong at altitude.
  • Secure scarves, hats and anything loose before walking to the helicopter.
  • Follow the operator’s rules on bags, tripods and what you can carry on board.

A wide-to-standard zoom lens covers the landscapes and the views through the window. Keep your gear simple and check the operator’s hand-luggage rules.

November itinerary: combine a helicopter flight with Mount Cook sightseeing

Option A: One day at Mount Cook

Morning: arrive at the departure point before check-in and take your flight if the weather allows.

Midday: have lunch in or near Mount Cook Village and visit an easy viewpoint.

Afternoon: pick a short walk that is open, or a Tasman Valley viewpoint, allowing for the weather and track conditions. Check Department of Conservation notices for closures before you go.

This works if you are already in the region. It is a poor plan if you are driving in from a distant city that morning.

Option B: Two days for weather flexibility

Day 1: arrive in the Mackenzie, take an early flight and enjoy the Mount Cook viewpoints.

Day 2: keep space for a rebooked flight if day 1 did not work out, then explore Lake Pukaki, Twizel or Tekapo.

Choose this plan if you would be disappointed to miss the flight altogether.

Should you book a November helicopter tour in advance?

Yes, especially if you want a particular glacier flight, a particular time, or a seat in a busy week. Glacier Helicopters suggests booking about a month ahead from November to March. Booking early protects your preferred departure, but it does not protect you from mountain weather.

A practical order for booking:

  1. Decide whether a glacier landing is essential.
  2. Choose a flight from the right departure point.
  3. Book it early in your stay in the region.
  4. Read the cancellation policy and check-in instructions.
  5. Reconfirm the flight and the weather plan with the operator before departure.

Frequently asked questions

Are Mount Cook helicopter tours operating in November?

Yes. The scenic flight operators fly year-round, November included, but departure times, seats and flying conditions vary by date. Check the live booking calendar for your date.

Will there still be snow at Mount Cook in November?

Yes. Snow and ice stay on the higher peaks and glaciers, and INFLITE’s alpine landing site usually still has snow in November. Not every alpine landing is a snow landing, though. If standing on snow is essential, choose a glacier flight and check its landing description.

Can I see the Tasman Glacier from a helicopter in November?

Yes, most Mount Cook scenic flights show you the Tasman Valley and the glacier. The exact route depends on the flight you book and the conditions on the day.

Is November too windy for helicopter tours?

No month is guaranteed calm. Mountain wind can affect flights in November, as in other seasons, and the operator decides on the day whether it is safe to fly.

What happens if my November flight is cancelled?

When an operator cancels for weather, you can usually reschedule or get a refund, depending on the operator and where you booked. Check the policy before booking; the rules for cancelling yourself can differ.

Is a 25-minute Mount Cook helicopter flight worth it?

It can be excellent for a first flight or a tighter budget, especially if mountain scenery is the main goal. If you particularly want a Tasman Glacier landing, a longer glacier flight or the combo suits you better. Our is it worth it guide weighs it up.

Is November better than December for a snow landing?

At the lower alpine landing sites, often yes: INFLITE says its Tasman Taster site can lose its snow from about December to March, and conditions vary from year to year. In either month, glacier flights are the more reliable choice for snow and ice, weather permitting. See Mount Cook helicopter tours in December for the summer picture.

Which November flight to choose

For a short first flight, look at a 25-minute helicopter flight with an alpine landing, which in November usually still lands on snow. If your November trip is about standing on a glacier, choose a flight that names the Tasman Glacier as its landing. Either way, book it early in your stay and keep room for the Southern Alps weather to change.
