Mount Cook Helicopter Tours for Couples

Which Mount Cook helicopter flight suits two people: flight lengths, glacier or alpine landings, what two seats cost, shared cabins, seating and when a private charter makes sense.

Updated October 2026

For most couples, the best Mount Cook helicopter flight is a 40 to 45-minute trip with a landing on the Haupapa/Tasman Glacier. It is long enough to fly up the glacier towards Aoraki/Mount Cook and stand on the ice together, and it costs a fraction of a private helicopter. Take a 25 to 35-minute flight with an alpine landing if the budget is tighter, and look at a private charter only when privacy is part of the occasion. One thing to know before you book: two tickets on a scenic flight do not give you the helicopter to yourselves. Standard flights are shared.

Why Mount Cook works so well for couples

Depending on weight and balance, you may not even sit next to each other, so the flight is special for where the helicopter takes you.

The Southern Alps rise almost straight out of the valley around Aoraki/Mount Cook. Scenic routes pass the Tasman Glacier, Tasman Lake, the Hochstetter Icefall, the Grand Plateau and the country’s highest peaks. The longest flights cross the Main Divide to the Fox and Franz Josef glaciers on the West Coast before returning.

Then comes the landing. The helicopter settles on a snowfield or the glacier, the doors open, and you are standing inside the view you were looking down on a few minutes earlier. You can walk around the landing area, take photographs and look at the mountains. On INFLITE’s glacier flights you are outside for 10 to 15 minutes, and for two people travelling together those minutes are often the part they remember.

Which Mount Cook helicopter tour is best for two?

No single flight suits every couple. Choose by what matters most to the two of you: price, a glacier landing, time in the air or privacy.

1. Best for most couples: a 40 to 45-minute glacier-landing flight

If the budget allows, start here. A flight of about 40 to 45 minutes gives you far more of the mountains than an entry-level trip, and it usually includes the moment most people picture when they imagine a Mount Cook helicopter ride: stepping out onto snow and glacier ice below the Southern Alps.

Southern Lakes Helicopters’ Tasman Glacier Explorer takes about 40 minutes, follows the glacier towards Aoraki/Mount Cook and lands once on the Tasman Glacier. It costs from NZ$665 per person booked direct; on GetYourGuide it sells as the Tasman Glacier & National Park Scenic Flight from $363, rated 4.7 from 22 reviews.

Glacier Helicopters’ Glacier Discoverer is the closest alternative. It costs NZ$665 direct, flies the upper Tasman Glacier and the Hochstetter Icefall and lands on the glacier. On GetYourGuide it is the 40-minute Tasman Glacier Helicopter Flight from $374, with only 13 reviews so far.

Why we like this option for couples

You get:

  • a good stretch of time in the air;
  • the big glacier scenery;
  • a real landing on snow or ice;
  • time outside for photographs;
  • a few minutes on the ice that feel far more personal than the cabin.

For two people, budget about NZ$1,330 booked direct with either operator.

That is a lot of money. The step up from a short flight to a glacier flight still adds more to the day than the step from a good glacier flight to the longest one.

Our pick: this is the best balance of scenery and price for two.

2. Best value: a 25 to 35-minute flight with an alpine landing

You do not need the longest flight to see what makes Mount Cook special, and many short flights still land.

Southern Lakes Helicopters’ 30-minute Aoraki Panorama costs from NZ$400 per person direct, plus the fuel surcharge, with one mountain landing; it is sold direct only, not on GetYourGuide. Glacier Helicopters’ 30-minute Mountain Scenic costs NZ$395 direct and includes an alpine landing; on GetYourGuide it is the Helicopter Flight with Alpine Landing from $277, rated 4.9 from 49 reviews. INFLITE’s Scenic Helicopter Flight with Alpine Landing is 25 minutes from $217, rated 4.7 from 530 reviews, the most reviewed flight on this site.

Two seats on one of these cost about NZ$760 to NZ$800 direct, against roughly NZ$1,330 for a glacier flight.

What you give up

You keep most of the mountain scenery. You give up the glacier.

An alpine landing puts you down somewhere high in the mountains, but not necessarily on the Tasman Glacier. The landing is shorter too: The Helicopter Line’s 25-minute Alpine Vista ($220, 4.8 from only 9 reviews) lands for about 6 to 8 minutes. INFLITE says its alpine sites have snow most of the year but can be bare in the heat of summer, roughly December to March.

If all you want is a helicopter, snowy mountains and good photographs, a short flight may be enough. If you have been picturing yourselves walking out onto a glacier, read the listing carefully before you book: it should say “glacier landing”, not “alpine landing”. Our snow landing guide explains the difference month by month.

3. Best for a honeymoon or anniversary: an extended glacier flight

If the trip marks something important, the longer flights are easier to justify.

INFLITE’s Grand Circle lasts about 55 minutes and you can fly it by helicopter or ski plane. It crosses the Southern Alps to the West Coast, takes in the Fox and Franz Josef glaciers as well as the Tasman Glacier and Aoraki/Mount Cook, and lands on the glacier. It costs NZ$799 per adult direct (NZ$749 for children up to 12). On GetYourGuide it sells as the 55-Minute Scenic Flight in Helicopter or Ski Plane from $428, with only 8 reviews there; the ski plane version on Viator holds 5.0 from 16 reviews.

Glacier Helicopters’ Grand Glacier Experience takes about 50 minutes and costs NZ$795 direct. It follows the Tasman Glacier, crosses the Southern Alps for views of the Franz Josef and Fox glaciers and lands on the glacier. Its GetYourGuide listing, the Tasman Glacier and West Coast Helicopter Flight from $477, has 7 reviews so far.

For two people, that comes to about NZ$1,600 booked direct.

It is a serious purchase. In return, the flight stops being a Mount Cook outing and becomes a tour of the whole Southern Alps and the Main Divide. The Helicopter Line flies the same crossing as the Aoraki & The Glaciers 55-Minute Flight, from $500 and rated 4.8 from 46 reviews.

Is the longer flight worth the extra?

Yes, if:

  • this may be your only visit to the South Island;
  • you want to see the West Coast glaciers;
  • the flight is a big part of a honeymoon or anniversary;
  • you can afford it without dropping something else you care about.

Probably not, if you want the thrill of a helicopter and a snow landing. A good 40-minute glacier flight already gives you both.

The helicopter and ski plane combo for couples

Mount Cook is one of the few places where you can fly a helicopter and a ski plane on the same trip, and couples often overlook it.

INFLITE’s Ultimate Alpine Experience flies you up in one aircraft and back in the other, with a landing on the upper Tasman Glacier. In about 45 minutes it covers Tasman Lake, the Hochstetter Icefall, the Grand Plateau and Aoraki/Mount Cook. On GetYourGuide it is the Ski Plane and Helicopter Glacier Combo Flight, from $314 and rated 4.7 from 378 reviews; direct it costs NZ$599 per adult, about NZ$1,198 for two.

If the two of you cannot agree on which aircraft to fly, this is a better answer than buying a longer helicopter flight. You get two different sensations:

  • Helicopter: close to the slopes, agile and dramatic.
  • Ski plane: steadier, with a wider view and the odd pleasure of touching down on skis high in the mountains.

If you would like to collect a distinctive New Zealand experience together and are not set on a helicopter-only trip, put this near the top of the list. Our combo flight page covers the route leg by leg.

Will we have the helicopter to ourselves?

Usually, no. Scheduled scenic flights are shared, and Southern Lakes Helicopters says minimum passenger numbers apply to its shared flights.

Booking two seats does not make the helicopter private. You might fly with another couple, a family or a few single travellers. INFLITE’s helicopters seat five to seven people depending on weight, and The Helicopter Line’s carry up to six.

For most couples this is no problem, because everyone spends the flight looking out of the windows. It does matter if you are imagining a quiet flight for just the two of you.

Can we sit together?

Possibly, but do not count on it. Helicopter seating depends on the aircraft’s weight and balance, and INFLITE says seats are assigned by weight on the day and cannot be chosen or guaranteed in advance.

So expect a shared flight, and do not count on sitting shoulder to shoulder the whole way. If sitting together matters because of nerves, mobility or a special occasion, ask the operator before you book. They may be able to help, but safety comes first.

Does everyone get a window seat?

Not always. It depends on the aircraft: some layouts give almost everyone a good view out, others put one passenger in a middle seat.

If photography matters to one of you, say so at check-in. The crew still cannot promise a seat if weight and balance rule it out, but it gives them the chance to help.

Do not worry too much about sitting on the wrong side. Pilots fly the turns and approaches for sightseeing, and the mountains are rarely on one side only.

Is the glacier landing private?

On a shared scenic flight, usually not. Everyone on your flight gets out at the same landing site, and other sightseeing aircraft may use nearby landing areas.

That rarely makes it feel crowded. You are in a huge alpine landscape with a handful of people, far fewer than at any roadside viewpoint. If what you picture is the two of you alone in the Southern Alps, you need a private charter; a scheduled scenic flight will not give you that.

Private Mount Cook helicopter flights for couples

Private flights exist, and they cost much more. Southern Lakes Helicopters quotes each private charter individually. INFLITE sells private and tailored flights where only your group and the pilot are on board.

INFLITE’s Picnic Amongst the Peaks is the clearest example. It includes:

  • a private helicopter;
  • up to six passengers;
  • about 90 minutes;
  • a glacier landing;
  • a private alpine picnic with bubbles;
  • a price of NZ$4,999 per helicopter.

It is sold direct only, not on GetYourGuide or Viator. For the price gap, a couple could take a normal glacier flight and pay for several other big South Island days.

For a honeymoon, a milestone anniversary, an elopement, a wedding photo session or a proposal, privacy may be the whole point, and then a charter makes sense. If you are planning to propose, our Mount Cook helicopter proposal guide covers private charters, landing time, photographers and weather backups.

Glacier landing or mountain landing: which feels more romantic?

The glacier landing. A mountain landing is far from disappointing, but standing on the Tasman Glacier feels further removed from ordinary sightseeing. You are on one of New Zealand’s great glaciers, and the aircraft is the only reason you can be there.

The change happens fast. One minute you are strapped into a helicopter, then the engine winds down, and then you are standing in the snow below the highest mountains in Australasia. If you are treating the flight as a special occasion, that moment matters.

How long do you spend on the snow?

It depends on the flight, the conditions and the landing site. INFLITE’s glacier landings last 10 to 15 minutes; The Helicopter Line’s 25-minute Alpine Vista lands for about 6 to 8 minutes. Nobody on a scenic flight spends an hour on the ice.

That is enough time to:

  • get out;
  • take photographs;
  • walk around the marked landing area;
  • take in the view;
  • swap who holds the camera;
  • have a few minutes together before you board again.

If you want real time exploring a glacier on foot, a scenic flight is the wrong product. Look at a heli-hike instead. Mt Cook Glacier Guiding’s 3-Hour Tasman Glacier Helicopter Ride and Hike costs from $569, rated 4.9 from 344 reviews, with up to two hours on the ice in crampons. It is closer to an activity than a scenic flight; our Tasman Glacier helicopter tours page compares it with The Helicopter Line’s version.

What will we see from the helicopter?

Routes vary with flight length and weather. The common sights are below; our scenic flight routes guide shows how far each route reaches.

Aoraki / Mount Cook

At 3,724 metres, Aoraki/Mount Cook is New Zealand’s highest mountain. From the valley floor it already dominates the view; from a helicopter you see how it sits within the rest of the Southern Alps.

Haupapa / Tasman Glacier

The Tasman is New Zealand’s longest glacier. Flights follow it from the lake at its foot towards the high snowfields, where clean white ice replaces the grey, rock-covered lower glacier.

Tasman Terminal Lake

The lake at the glacier’s lower end gives some of the best contrast on the route: pale water, moraine, ice and dark mountain walls.

Hochstetter Icefall

This mass of broken ice falls from high on Aoraki/Mount Cook towards the Tasman Glacier. From the air you see crevasses and towers of ice that you cannot make out from the valley.

Grand Plateau

A huge snow and ice basin high below Aoraki. It makes far more sense from the air than on a map.

Fox and Franz Josef glaciers

You need one of the longer flights that cross the Main Divide to see them. On one side is alpine ice; on the other, the wetter, greener West Coast. INFLITE’s Grand Circle takes in both West Coast glaciers before it returns across the Southern Alps.

Are morning flights better for couples?

Do not fix on a perfect time. Alpine weather matters far more than whether you fly at 9:30 a.m. or 2 p.m. Conditions around Aoraki/Mount Cook change quickly, and routes and landings depend on visibility, wind and cloud.

If you are staying more than one night, book the flight early in your stay. Then, if the weather cancels it, you have another chance. INFLITE, The Helicopter Line and Southern Lakes Helicopters all rebook or refund in full when they cancel for weather. That flexibility is worth more to a couple than any ideal time of day.

Don’t schedule your flight too tightly

This matters most if you are driving in to Mount Cook for the day. Avoid a plan like this:

10:00 Hooker Valley walk → 13:00 helicopter → 14:00 lunch → 15:00 drive away

Mountain flying does not run that neatly. Weather can mean:

  • a delayed departure;
  • a changed route;
  • a different landing site;
  • a new date;
  • a cancellation.

Leave room around the flight. A night in Aoraki/Mount Cook Village is better still.

How far in advance should couples book?

On ordinary dates you rarely need to book months ahead. Book earlier when:

  • you are travelling in the New Zealand summer;
  • you are visiting over Christmas and New Year;
  • you are travelling around Easter;
  • your honeymoon dates are fixed;
  • you have only one day at Mount Cook;
  • you want a longer or premium flight;
  • you need two seats on the same departure.

Selling out is only part of it. Operators have to match passenger numbers, aircraft, weather, weights and flying conditions, and a shared flight may need a minimum number of passengers before it goes. For a couple, that can mean being moved to another departure so the operator can combine passengers.

What happens if there are only two of us?

Check this when you book. Southern Lakes Helicopters says minimum numbers apply to its shared scenic flights, so even when two seats show as available online, the flight may still need more passengers to go ahead.

That is another reason to:

  • book an earlier departure and avoid the last one of the day;
  • keep your plans flexible;
  • leave a second possible flying day.

What should we wear?

You need no mountaineering gear for a scenic flight, only sensible mountain clothing. For a snow or glacier landing, wear:

  • closed shoes or boots;
  • long trousers;
  • a warm layer;
  • a jacket;
  • sunglasses.

In winter, add a hat, gloves and a warmer outer layer.

Even on a sunny summer afternoon, the landing site can feel much colder than the village. Snow also reflects a great deal of sunlight, so sunglasses are one of the most useful things you can bring.

Can we wear nice clothes for photos?

Yes, within reason. Glacier landings are a popular setting for couples’ and wedding photographs, and INFLITE sells exclusive wedding photography packages: a private Tasman Glacier landing and a separate Liebig Dome helicopter package.

On a shared scenic flight, though, footwear matters more than looking perfect. Snow can be soft, slippery, uneven and deeper than it looks. Leave heels and delicate shoes at the hotel, and wear something warm that you like seeing yourself in.

Photography tips for couples

You do not need a big camera. Phones work well on a snow landing because the landscape is huge and suits wide shots.

During the flight

Shoot:

  • Aoraki through the window;
  • the glacier directly below you;
  • the icefalls;
  • the ridgelines;
  • the helicopter’s shadow, if you can see it.

Keep your phone or camera secure, and do not press it against the window unless the crew says it is fine. Holding the lens close to the glass cuts down reflections.

During the landing

This is when most couples get their favourite photos. Instead of taking turns photographing each other all the way through the stop, take:

  1. one wide shot of both of you with the landscape;
  2. one portrait with the helicopter;
  3. one shot facing the mountains;
  4. a few candid photos;
  5. then put the camera away for a minute.

The last step sounds obvious, but it is easy to spend a once-in-a-lifetime glacier landing looking at a phone screen.

Will the pilot take a photo of us?

Often the pilot or another passenger will take a quick photo if there is time. Treat it as a courtesy that is not included. If good photos of the two of you matter a lot, a private photography charter is the dependable option. On a shared flight, another couple on board can help: you swap cameras on the landing.

What if one of us is nervous about helicopters?

A scenic helicopter flight is nothing like the flying you see in films. The pilot shows you the mountains and does not perform stunts, and flights are usually smooth when the weather allows. Pilots choose the route for the conditions on the day.

A nervous flyer may still notice:

  • the noise;
  • the vibration;
  • the helicopter banking in turns;
  • mountains passing quite close;
  • changes in height.

Tell the ground crew before you leave; they fly first-timers every day. Our first-timer’s guide walks through the flight step by step.

If the fear is serious, consider a ski plane. It feels more like ordinary fixed-wing flying, and INFLITE lets you choose a helicopter or a ski plane on some glacier flights. Its 45-minute Glacier Highlights flight, for example, sells on Viator as a ski plane flight or a helicopter flight, both from $380.

What if one of us gets motion sickness?

Helicopters do not necessarily cause more motion sickness than small planes, but people react differently. A few precautions help:

  • eat something light beforehand;
  • go easy on alcohol the night before;
  • look outside and keep your eyes off your phone;
  • tell the pilot if you start to feel unwell.

If small aircraft make you badly sick, talk to a pharmacist or doctor about medication before the trip.

Can you propose during a normal Mount Cook helicopter flight?

You can, but you probably won’t be alone. A shared flight may carry several strangers, and everyone gets out together at the landing. Some people would love the applause; it just isn’t private.

If you are planning a proposal, contact the operator before you book. INFLITE and Southern Lakes Helicopters both sell private flights where you can ask for a longer landing, a photographer or a picnic. No operator sells a priced “proposal package”; you ask for a proposal on a private charter. Our proposal guide sets out the options, costs and questions to ask.

Is a private helicopter worth it for two?

For ordinary sightseeing, probably not. A shared glacier flight gives you nearly all the scenery for a fraction of the cost.

For a big occasion, the sums change. A private flight buys time and privacy, which a longer shared flight cannot. Instead of squeezing a proposal, wedding photos or a toast into a short shared landing, you plan the flight around the two of you. Treat a private charter as a different product from a sightseeing flight.

Short flight vs long flight for couples

Use the lists below to choose; our 25 vs 40 vs 55-minute guide shows what each extra quarter-hour adds to the route.

Book around 25 to 35 minutes if:

  • you mainly want to try a helicopter;
  • your budget for two is under about NZ$1,000;
  • an alpine landing is enough;
  • you are fitting the flight into a busy day.

Book around 40 to 45 minutes if:

  • this is your first Mount Cook flight;
  • you want a glacier landing;
  • you want the best balance of price and scenery;
  • the trip is special but the budget still has limits.

Book around 50 to 55 minutes if:

  • you want to cross the Southern Alps;
  • you want the widest view of the glaciers;
  • seeing Fox and Franz Josef from the air matters;
  • this is likely to be your only visit to Mount Cook.

Book private if:

  • privacy matters in itself;
  • you are proposing;
  • it is an elopement or a wedding shoot;
  • you want a picnic or a longer landing;
  • the flight is the centre of the occasion.

How much should two people budget?

These are October 2026 operator prices for two adults, booked direct in New Zealand dollars. Our Mount Cook helicopter prices guide has every flight’s per-person price in US dollars on GetYourGuide and Viator.

Budget option

NZ$760–800 for two

A 25 to 30-minute flight with an alpine landing.

Sweet spot

NZ$1,200–1,400 for two

About 40 to 45 minutes with a glacier landing, including the NZ$1,198 combo.

Premium scheduled flight

About NZ$1,600 for two

A longer circuit over the Southern Alps and the West Coast glaciers.

Private flight

Several thousand dollars

INFLITE’s 90-minute private helicopter picnic, for example, costs NZ$4,999 for the helicopter and up to six people.

Operators change prices and surcharges, so check the price again on the day you book.

Should couples choose a helicopter or ski plane?

For two people booking a special flight, we lean towards the helicopter. It feels closer and more immediate, you see straight down, it can land on sites a plane cannot reach, and the whole flight has a sense of adventure.

The ski plane has its own appeal:

  • it is a rarer experience;
  • the take-offs and landings on the glacier are fascinating;
  • it feels more like ordinary flying, which helps nervous passengers;
  • the cabin feels roomier.

If neither of you has flown in either aircraft, the combo flight is a good compromise. Our ski plane vs helicopter page compares the two in detail.

The best Mount Cook helicopter experience for two, ranked

Best overall: a 40 to 45-minute Tasman Glacier helicopter flight

This is the flight we would choose for most couples, such as the Southern Lakes Tasman Glacier flight. You get enough time in the air, the main Mount Cook scenery and the glacier landing that turns sightseeing into an alpine trip.

Best on a tighter budget: a 25 to 35-minute alpine-landing flight

You save several hundred dollars between you and still get the helicopter, the mountain scenery and a landing; the 25-minute alpine landing flight is the most reviewed. Check whether the landing is alpine or on a glacier.

Best for a honeymoon: a 50 to 55-minute flight like the Grand Circle

The biggest scheduled flights cross the Main Divide and show far more of the Southern Alps. For one big splurge on a South Island honeymoon, the Aoraki & The Glaciers 55-minute flight is a strong candidate.

Most unusual: the helicopter and ski plane combo

Two aircraft, one glacier landing and a good story. For couples who want variety more than helicopter time, the combo flight is good value at $314 each.

Best for privacy: a private charter

Expensive and unnecessary for ordinary sightseeing, but the right choice for a proposal, wedding photos or a milestone celebration.

Our recommendation

For most couples at Aoraki/Mount Cook, we would book neither the cheapest flight nor the most expensive. We would look for three things:

  1. about 40 to 45 minutes in total;
  2. a real snow or glacier landing;
  3. a route up the Tasman Glacier towards Aoraki/Mount Cook.

That combination gives you most of what makes a helicopter flight here extraordinary, without the price of a private charter.

If the gap between a mountain landing and a glacier landing is a few hundred dollars for the two of you and this is likely to be your only visit, we would pay the extra.

If you are celebrating something big, do not just buy a longer shared flight. Ask about a private helicopter. Past a certain price, having the mountains to yourselves is worth more than another ten minutes in the air.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a Mount Cook helicopter ride for two?

Booked direct in October 2026, scheduled scenic flights cost about NZ$760 to NZ$1,600 for two adults, depending on the length of the flight and whether it lands on a mountain site or the glacier. On GetYourGuide, two seats cost from $434 (two at $217) to about $1,000. Private flights cost several thousand dollars.

Are Mount Cook helicopter flights private for couples?

Normally not. Scheduled scenic flights are shared with other passengers and may need a minimum number of passengers. Private charters are sold separately.

Can two people sit together in the helicopter?

Often, but it cannot be guaranteed, because the crew seats passengers by weight to balance the aircraft.

Do Mount Cook helicopter tours land on snow?

Most do, but not all in every month. Some shorter flights make an alpine landing, which can be bare of snow roughly December to March; others land on the Tasman Glacier. Check the tour description.

Is a glacier landing worth paying extra for?

For most first-time visitors, yes. Standing on the glacier feels like being inside the Southern Alps as well as looking at them from the air.

How long is a good Mount Cook helicopter flight?

For most couples, 40 to 45 minutes. A 25 to 35-minute flight works on a smaller budget, and 50 to 55 minutes is worth it if you want the wider circuit over the Southern Alps and the West Coast glaciers.

Can you propose on a Mount Cook helicopter tour?

Yes, but a normal tour is shared with other passengers. For privacy, arrange a private charter in advance; our proposal guide explains how.

What happens if bad weather cancels our flight?

Flights only go in safe conditions. INFLITE, The Helicopter Line and Southern Lakes Helicopters rebook you or refund in full when they cancel for weather. GetYourGuide bookings follow the listing’s cancellation terms.

Should we book our flight for the first or last day at Mount Cook?

The first possible day. If the weather stops the flight, you still have time to rebook.
